Philosophy
We are architects because we love architecture.
That needs to be said because sometimes the day to day concerns with running a business can obscure our deeper purpose.
And of course let’s not forget that architecture is still a profession and we owe it to our clients and society at large to operate in certain defined ways.
But in the end it’s about design. So what are the interests that drive our architecture ?
Let’s start with some definitions by exclusion. Our work is not driven by an obsessive expression of technology or any single technological issue such as sustainabilty. It’s not an architecture that pretends it is actually “Art”. Neither is it solely about providing commercially marketable floorspace. We are against the culture of personality architecture – our experience is that only the smallest buildings have one author and we celebrate the truth that architecture is a collaborative endeavor.
Our starting point is always the city. The city is by definition a blend of interests – sometimes complementary, sometimes downright contradictory. A healthy city is a healthy balance of many issues of this kind.
We like the word “weave” – the urban fabric is a “weave” or blend of different threads. We want our buildings to reflect the complex blend that is the city.
