Scheme description
The disused and neglected bus garage in the centre of Reigate was designed in 1931 in the “Arts and Crafts” style by Wallis, Gilbert & Partners, the architects of the famous Hoover factory. The building was Grade II listed and the local plan had designated the site outside the zone for office development.
A new use for the building seemed hard to imagine, and yet we remained convinced that it could be given a new lease of life. An ingenious design providing over 6,000 sq. m. (65,000 sq. ft.) of office space was conceived. Elements of the old building were retained and combined with bold new additions to meet the demands of today’s office market.
The result received enthusiastic support from English Heritage and after complex negotiations with the local planning authority the scheme was granted consent. The building was completed in the summer of 2001.
