Scheme description
Masterplanning of large scale sites is a particular skill that we are able to offer to clients. We are currently involved in several masterplanning schemes including this one in the London Borough of Havering.

Covering an area of 44 hectares the site includes a former quarry which until recently has been used for waste landfill. The site lies on the edge of a large area of suburban housing and has previously been designated as part of London’s Green Belt.

The proposal is to redraw the Green Belt boundary to release about half of the site for housing with the remainder being landscaped to form a new park as a focus for the entire neighbourhood. This process has required a full and detailed Local Development Framework submission to the local authority, prepared in association with the planning consultants Hepher Dixon and a team of specialist consultants.

Our approach to the masterplan layout was to create a clear radial structure focused on the new park with apartment buildings defining its edge and with family housing in traditional streets behind. Historical precedents such as Battersea Park in South West London have been important models of how this kind of development can be made a success.
