Scheme description
The Berkeley is a renowned five star hotel off Knightsbridge. In August 2000 the office prepared a feasibility study to increase the number of rooms. The report dealt with internal layouts, construction logistics, town planning issues and cost. By October 2000, a detailed planning application had been submitted. Following a period of negotiation with Westminster, planning permission was obtained in March 2001.

The construction work was phased. The initial phase comprised new substructure, constructed without interrupting the functioning of the hotel kitchens. The second phase began as soon as consent was received in March 2001. This involved the construction of the new superstructure within the tightly constrained service yard to create 46 new bedrooms each of 38 sq. m (410 sq. ft.).

Like the much larger works on the Langham Hotel in London this project has demonstrated our ability to bring together new and old elements on tight urban sites under the most demanding circumstances.
